How to play LetterGauge
LetterGauge is a daily five-letter word game built around alphabet logic. You get six guesses to find the answer, and every letter you enter gives you a directional clue.
The rules
- Type any valid five-letter word. Your guess is checked automatically when you enter the fifth letter.
- Read the clue under each letter position.
- ← means the target letter is earlier in the alphabet than your guessed letter.
- → means the target letter is later in the alphabet than your guessed letter.
- ✓ means you found the exact letter in the exact position.
- Solve all five positions within six guesses to win.
Arrow distance gives you more information
LetterGauge also tells you roughly how far away the target letter is. One arrow means the answer is 1–4 letters away, two arrows means 5–9 letters away, and three arrows means 10 or more letters away. That makes each guess useful even when none of the letters are exact.
Use the Letter Gauges
Below the board, five gauges track the possible alphabet range for each position. As you make guesses, the ranges shrink. For example, a position might narrow from A–Z to M–R, helping you choose a word that tests the remaining possibilities efficiently.
Strategy tips
Strong LetterGauge play is a mix of word knowledge and search strategy. Early guesses can test letters around the middle of the alphabet to split large ranges. Later guesses should use the narrowed ranges to form realistic words. Sometimes the best move is not your most likely answer—it is a word that gives you better information across several positions.
A different kind of Wordle alternative
Players who enjoy Wordle and other daily word games will recognize the shared daily puzzle, six-guess challenge, streaks, and spoiler-free sharing. LetterGauge also lets you keep playing unlimited extra rounds after the daily puzzle. The solving logic is different: LetterGauge focuses on alphabet direction and distance at each letter position rather than letter-presence clues.
LetterGauge is an independent word game and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Wordle or The New York Times.

LetterGauge is a free daily five-letter word game. You have six guesses, and every letter position tells you whether the target letter is earlier in the alphabet, later in the alphabet, or an exact match.
How are LetterGauge clues different from Wordle clues?
Instead of telling you whether a guessed letter appears somewhere else in the word, LetterGauge gives an alphabet-direction clue for each position. Left means the target letter comes before your guess, right means it comes after, and a check mark means it is exact.
